Feel The Fear.....& do it anyway

Good Morning Fudgey followers

As promised a wee update on this week.

Monday: First Run of Official 12 week plan. 30 minutes easy run. Groin was still feeling really tight but I felt I couldn't miss day 1 run 1. Once I got into the run it was good. Ran slower than my normal pace - it was supposed to be easy after all. Ran 4.83km in 31 mins 41 seconds. The running felt OK but afterwards I think if the muscles in my right inner thigh & groin area could have disowned me they would have.
On a positive note though the ITB is perfect :-)

Tuesday: In the Gym. My Happy Place. So many tensions / stresses / anxieties get resolved when I go for a workout. I confess I am a gym junkie these days but it helps keep me sane and makes me feel so good. This was a non running day on my schedule and was planned a cross training day - there was a little treadmill running though.
10 minutes Run 1.73km
Superset of 15 reps swiss ball plank roll & 12 reps lower back extensions x 3 sets
Superset of 15 reps Olympic bar squats with 5lb on each side & 10 lunges each leg with 20kg bar x 3 sets
3 sets of 15 reps bosu ball squats with 7kg dumbbells
and finished off with another 10 min run 1.75km

Wednesday: Rest Day. I was limping :-( The right side wasn't feeling happy at all. Thankfully I had the opportunity to get a sports massage. For anyone who hasn't experienced a sports massage it's not like going to a beauty salon & being all relaxed - it can actually be quite painful. My massage therapist was delighted with the ITB on the left leg & pleased with my legs in general but when she came to work the right inner thigh & groin I thought I was going to be sick with the pain.
The muscles felt a lot looser afterwards but the heat from my leg was intense and it felt like a deep bruise might develop, but one of the best ways to avoid serious & permanent injuries is to deal with niggles as soon as they start.

Thursday: Was meant to be a running day and an interval session was planned, but I did nothing. The right leg although feeling much more relaxed was very tender. Since I have a 5km Race on Sunday I thought it better to take another rest day and see how I felt on Friday

Friday: Feel the Fear.....and do it anyway. Today was also a running day on the schedule a 40 minute steady run, but I opted for Thursday's missed interval session instead & chose to head to the gym to do it so that if anything didn't feel good I could work round it by cross training i.e cycling, rowing, cross trainer or even heading down to the pool. About an hour before I headed to the gym I ate a banana and 30 minutes before I had a Viper Extreme bar
Session consisted of 10 minutes easy running followed by 6 x 4 minute cycles (2 mins fast, 2 mins easy) and then finished off with 10 minutes easy running.
I was so apprehensive when I stepped on the treadmill - what if I couldn't run? what if it really hurt? would I be able to run on Sunday? I could have h=just decided not to even try and headed to the swimming pool but sometime you have to Feel the fear and face it head on. The first 5 minutes felt awkward and a little uncomfortable but as I settled into a stride and relaxed it got better. It took a full 20 minutes to find my running form and overall it wasn't my best session but I did it. If it had been really painful I would have stopped. It is important to listen to your body , but sometimes you have to push yourself out of your comfort zone.
Some major stretching and cooling down after the session and I actually think that the increased blood flow through my muscles helped the inner thigh / groin.

Friday Night Inspiration / Motivation

Eddie Izzard - Eddie Iz Running If you haven't seen this you have to try and catch some of it. You can get it on the BBC iplayer or follow this link
The crazy guy took up the challenge to run 43 marathons in 51 days for Sports Relief
An incredible challenge for an experienced runner but when the programme starts it turns out Eddie has done 2 weeks training and the challenge was to start in another 4 weeks.
We watched the first episode and it made me laugh, cry, sit open mouthed in sheer disbelief. By the end of the episode not to give too much away he had run approx 10 marathons. It made me think if he can do that of course I can run the half marathon in May. In fact I'll go out and run it now - it wouldn't be easy and yes it would hurt but I COULD do it.
Go on give it a quick peep.

Saturday: and we arrive at today. Since I have my 5km race tomorrow rather than a usual Sunday long run I decided I'd head out for a quick 2.76km run. This was really to test out how the whole body is feeling especially running outside as it is completely different to running on a treadmill. I was still apprehensive about the right side though it is feeling pretty good.
Fast Fudge or Little Running Wife as hubby has started to call me annihilated the 2.76km this morning. 15 mins 4 seconds - that is incredible pace for me. Everything felt good so I'm now super excited for tomorrow.
Will let you know how I get on.

Well I had better get on with some housework now.

Hope you all have a fantastic weekend

Oh & special mention to another crazy running chick - Rachel is running the Bath Half Marathon tomorrow. Go get em Rachel. GOOD LUCK :-)

I ran to Rochdale

Hey Fudgey Friends,

I was just updating map my run with my recent running sessions and was amazed at how the distances on my shoes are starting to mount up.
Between my 2 amazing pairs of Saucony shoes I have run 269.54 km (167 miles) since November 2009.

That's the equivalent of me running from href=">
View Larger Map">Edinburgh to Rochdale or just 8km short of Edinburgh to Derry!

For once Mrs Fudgey is speechless. LOL

OMG how on earth did that happen.
Even I'm impressed & I'm my own toughest critic!

Will blog again soon

love to everyone

Please please please if anyone comes across any marauding mojos return to their listless owners!

I will try & post tonight or tomorrow morning with an update but specially for Katie - younger sister of KMac - here's some recipes so she doesn't have to keep living off my soup.

12 weeks to go! Official training plan starts here

Hello Fudgey Friends

Well at this time in 12 weeks time the Edinburgh Half Marathon will be over. 12 weeks to go.....official 12 week training plan now starting.
I'm both excited & nervous.

I've got 2 and a bit training plans. I have a beginner & an intermediate training plan for running a half marathon - It's really strange for me to think that I now fall into the intermediate category based on the amount of running I've already put in. However I'm going to mix and match the 2 plans. The bit is the extra stuff I'd like to do i.e my personal training sessions and cross training such as spinning, resistance and toning.
I'm going to take each week as it comes and listen to my body and build my training around that rather than follow one rigid plan to the letter.

Today I headed to the gym for a treadmill run rather than my usual Sunday long run.
Reasons as follows:
1) It's flipping baltic here! No honestly it is really really cold and with my recent injury keeping the muscles warm seems to help.
2)If I run on the treadmill and it doesn't feel good I can hop off and do some form of cross training - bike, rower, cross trainer and some weights. Where as if I was outside running I'd just have to come home and feel fed up
3)I have a 5km race next weekend that I'm kind of saving myself for

Anyway I'm pleased to report I managed 7km in 41 minutes 18 seconds and my ITB feels great.
I was also a good Fudge and did plenty of stretching.
Only one minor issue....I now have a niggle in the right side of my groin....but that it is all it is just a minor niggle and probably compensation as I'm still protecting the left side ITB quite a bit so I need to regain my confidence and strength and focus on my overall running posture again so I don't bear weight unevenly. See I'm getting really serious (yes hubby....and boring) about it all now ;-)

So the stats this week:
Total distance run this week 22km
Total running time 2 hours 09 mins 26 secs

Distance Run in February 65.5km
Distance Run 2010 to date 169.9km

So after my gym visit this morning I headed home to find wonder hubby had done all the ironing.
I made us both some scrambled eggs.
Whilst hubby worked out, I got busy in the Fudgey kitchen.
I put on a load of washing........yep mainly sports kit!
Then I created Sunflower seed and blueberry crispy bars and Butternut Squash, Carrot & Honey soup.
The crispy bars are the same recipe as the Pumpkin seed and apricot bars simply replace the pumpkin seeds with sunflower seeds and the apricots with blueberries

The Soup
Ingredients:
1 red onion chopped
1 onion chopped
2 cloves garlic chopped
4 large carrots peeled & chopped
1 small butternut squash, deseeded, peeled & diced
1 vegetable oxo cube
1 tablespoon honey
water
In typical Fudgey style this soup is never the same twice. The amount of carrot, butternut squash and onion varies and today I thought oh I know what I'll add some honey.
Method:
Basically just chop up all the ingredients & throw in a pan. Crumble in stock cube, add honey and top up with water & then simmer till veg is tender. Once cooled I blend this & it ends up like a thick puree.

Here is a question for you all. How come I can lift some non diddy, non girly weights in the gym but when it comes to crumbling a stock cube I'm useless???
I especially hate the new shaped x oxo ones. I think I may have to go back to the marigold swiss vegetable bouillon powder.

After all this kitchen action I took my lovely husband back to the place we were married at 6 months ago for some food. I can't believe it's been 6 months already, the wedding still seems like yesterday.
Mr Fudgey.....LOVE YOU LOADS XXXXXXXXX

and now we are home and chilling out. I'm just running myself a lovely Molton Brown bubble bath & then I think we'll watch a movie.

Hope you've all had a great weekend.

lots of love

Thank Fudgey It's Friday

Hello Fudgey Friends,

I've not forgotten about you all or abandoned you - it's just been a funny old week.
The weather has been miserable to say the least and I've had one of those weeks where I feel I've just plodded along. Get Up, Go to Work, Workout / Run, Work, Come home, Eat, Clean Up, Make Lunches, Sleep ....& so it begins again.
Work has been really good this week. Only 2 of us in so it could have been a nightmare but we've had a pretty good week & mostly got away on time.
So you see nothing awful just the treadmill of life.

So what's been happening since I last blogged.

Last weekend I made fabulous chickpea burgers.
Chickpea Burgers
Serves 2
268 Calories & 8.5g fat per portion

1 x 400g can, chickpeas, drained
1 medium onion finely chopped
1 whole canned sweet red pepper, well drained
1 clove garlic, chopped
1/2 teaspoon each ground cumin & coriander seed
pinch of chilli powder
1 level dessertspoon finely chopped coriander leaf
salt & pepper
1 egg white, beaten
1 dessertspoon corn oil
A little flour for coating

Mash the chickpeas in a bowl, or blend for a few seconds in an electric blender, without overblending as you still want some texture to the peas. In a bowl combine the chickpea puree with the onion, pepper, garlic, spices, coriander leaf, seasoning & egg white. Using your hands form into 4 patties firming well.
Heat the oil in a non stick frying pan, coat the burgers in a little flour & fry over a medium heat for 4 - 5 minutes each side or until the patties are golden. Serve immediately.

Fudgey Tips:
Make sure you do drain the chickpeas & pepper well as my mixture was pretty soggy! Also I put mine in the oven after simply browning on each side as I was making lamb burgers & potato wedges for hubby.

Photo Shoot

On Monday afternoon I headed off to Glasgow for my Scottish Slimmers photo shoot. I had my hair & make up done & had my photo taken in 3 of my dresses. I haven't actually seen any of the photos yet, but hubby took a quick snap on his phone. I love the result & think I scrub up quite well! Can't wait to see the photos from the day & will keep you updated if they are to be published anywhere.
Fabulous husband took me for a meal at La Vita before we headed back to Edinburgh.

Tuesday
Never slept well on Monday night. Woke up more tired than I had gone to bed.
Thought I better get some running in today since I'd not run since Friday. Not really in the mood but off I went...5km 29 mins 18 seconds later I was done but my leg was hurting again....own fault...naughty fudgey did not stretch.

Wednesday
Great sleep & Personal Training session at 8am - great way to start the day. Thought I had better stretch off before my session & the first thing Colin saw was my grimacing face....when I explained my leg was sore again he asked if I'd stretched so I had to confess No....yep fudgey's own fault.
Had yet another fantastic PT session. Colin knows me so well now & knows just how to get the best out of me and is helping me get ready for my half marathon now, for anyone who has never tried personal training I'd really strongly recommend it.

Today's session
10 minutes on the cardio wave machine
Olympic bar squats 4 sets of 15 reps
Cable crunches 15 reps superset with ab extensions with 25lb plate 15 reps - 3 sets
Tri set of a minute & a half on cross trainer, 20 side jumps & 10 sumo squats - 3 sets
Then the best bit stretching & Colin did some assisted stretches with me.......which were amazing & my leg is miraculously better.
So I need to show my lovely supportive husband how to help me stretch because it really really helps.

Thursday
Rest Day. Abs, Quads, Glutes & Hamstrings all feeling yesterdays exertions.
Yet more creations in the fudgey kitchen this evening....

Introducing....
Fudgey Pumpkin Seed & apricot crispy bars
75g porridge Oats
75g rice krispies
75g ready to eat semi dried apricots, chopped
30g pumpkin seeds
30g dessicated coconut
60g brown sugar
2 tbsp rapeseed oil
3tbsp honey
2 dessertspoons peanut butter
1 tbsp vanilla essence or extract
spray oil

Preheat oven to 180 or gas 4
mix together oats, krispies, apricots, pumpkin seeds, coconut & brown sugar
put oil, honey & peanut butter in a mug & microwave for 15 - 20 seconds on high (to make it easy to mix). Stir in vanilla
stir the liquid into the dry ingredients & mix thoroughly.
spray a square baking tin. Put mixture in tin and press down very firmly. I used a glass to do this.
Bake for 20 minutes
Remove and allow to cool in tin. Cut into 16 bars
store wrapped in foil or can be frozen.

Mr Fudgey, KMac, Mandy & Eileen all give these the thumbs up.

and finally it's Friday
Thought I better try and run today but distance would be dependent on how leg was feeling. I got up and for once fuelled up before heading out.... 2 extra wheatgerm crackers and small banana....I think this really helped.
10km 58mins 50 seconds ;-D
Lots of stretching.
Leg feels fab.

and also some weights....just for fun really!
superset swiss ball chest press 6kg weights 15 reps & 12 press ups (proper full men's ones!) 3 sets
3 sets bicep curls 5kg weights 12 reps
3 sets tricep extension with a 7kg weight 12 reps
3 sets bosu squats 15 reps
superset 15 ab extensions with 25lb plate & 30 oblique cycles 3 sets.

So now I feel I can sit back put my feet up and relax........on that note I'm away to find Mr Fudgey.

Hope you all have a great weekend

love

Exciting Times in Fudgey Land

Hello Fudgey Friends,

A quick update on the rest of the week's training before I fill you in on the exciting times in Fudgey Land.

Thursday: I joined my lovely friend Mandy for a spin class at lunchtime. I love spin but have been concentrating so much on my running of late that I've not been to many classes at all. My fantastic personal trainer Colin took the class on Thursday lunchtime. It was a brilliant 30 minute workout & the legs certainly were feeling it on Friday.

Friday: 5km Run 28 minutes 57 seconds. This run was really tough going but I stuck with it & am still consistently sub 30 minutes so looking pretty good for the meadows 5k in a couple of weeks.

The ITB is feeling brand new :-)
though I have been very careful and not run more than 7km yet but think this week coming I will be back to normal.

Saturday - had a lovely trip to North Berwick with Mum & Dad in Law & hubby. Thanks all for a lovely day out x

Decided to take a rest day today instead of my usual long run.

Total distance run this week 18km
Total running time 1 hours 32 mins 12 secs

Exciting Times in Fudgey Land
Those who know me will tell you I've haven't always been a lean mean Fudgey running machine - back in 2007 I weighed 6 stone more than I do now and I've been on a journey of weightloss since June 2007 till I reached my target weight September 2009.
It's not always been easy but I've had loads of encouragement and support from everyone around me, especially the amazing Mr Fudgey.
Anyway I was absolutely ecstatic when Scottish Slimmers emailed me to invite me to a photo shoot. So tomorrow I will be getting my hair & my make up done, styled & photographed.
I've also been approached by a freelance journalist who is keen on doing an article about me and my journey from Fudgey Big to Fudgey Small.
I'm not just pleased at the recognition for myself but also for everyone who has supported me and hopefully I will be able to inspire others too.
I also want to say a HUGE public Thank you to my boss Neil for allowing me the time off tomorrow - the 2 of us are in for a busy week with the rest of the team being on holiday. Thanks Neil - you're the best ever x

So for those who don't know me so well or didn't know me 3 years ago.
I've transformed from this:

to this:

I am really looking forward to my photo shoot. I'll update you all next week on how it goes, and of course on the running training.

Hope you have all had a great weekend.
